AppAttach is based on, or extends existing MSIX technology. It allows you to take any existing MSIX package, without altering or repackaging and ‘stream’ it to a virtual or physical machine, much like you are used to with existing Application Layering products. It is also been mentioned that Microsoft is slowly moving away from existing solutions like App-V, for example, and thus positioning MSIX as their main technology for application packaging/provisioning purposes going forward.

Amazon AppStream works by streaming (what’s in a name) applications from the AWS Cloud down to a user’s device – never mind the type. The concept is simple and according to Amazon it simplifies application management, improves security, and reduces costs by moving company’s applications from their users’ physical devices to the AWS Cloud. I would agree, except for the management part.

Average time to read: 5 minutesThroughout the years I have had the pleasure of visiting dozens of companies to talk about their ‘digital workspace’ challenges. Projects ranged from thousands of users/machines to just a few hundred. Some of these challenges were related to physical desktops, some to virtual, some were on-premises, some were cloud-based. I’ve worked for retail companies, financial, travel, in healthcare, etc. No matter their branch and/or size, they all dealt with the same types of issues.
Innovation and making progress! Liquidware – you’ve heard about them before, right?
Average time to read: 5 minutesEven though I’m no longer employed by Liquidware, I still very much like the technology and people involved. In today’s post, I want to highlight some of the major product updates they have launched throughout the last couple of months – it’s pretty impressive. If you are going to be at E2EVC (Amsterdam) next week, make sure to stop by their session, I’ve picked up a glimpse and it’s going to be good. It’s on Saturday at 10:50 and goes by the session name: Go Hybrid. Applications, Profiles, and Data accessible via On-prem and Cloud. Presented by David Bieneman – Co-Founder and CEO of Liquidware.
The ultimate cheat sheet page
Average time to read: < 1 minuteThroughout the last couple of years, I have published multiple, so-called ultimate cheat sheets around the FMA, Citrix printing, and application layering. But also around IoT networking and IOPS in general, for example. Looking through my website statistics I can see that these articles or small e-books are by far the most popular, even the older ones. Because of this, and because I like to have them a bit more organized myself – they really come in handy from time to time – I decided to bundle them all into one page, for your convenience. The ultimate cheat sheet page, if you will. Next to this blogpost, you’ll also find it here (the page itself).
The application layering technology cheat sheet, version 4.0!
It has already been six months (a little over) since my last update, time for version 4.0 – a lot has happened in the meantime, as a result, you’ll see some noticeable changes. Not only from a feature/functionality perspective but from a vendor/company perspective as well. From now on I will be focusing on the big three: Citrix, with App Layering – former Unidesk, VMware App Volumes and Liquidware FlexApps.

Average time to read: 2 minutesThroughout the past year and a half I have had some very positive feedback on the application layering cheat sheet, needles to say that I will continue to update the sheet going forward. Currently I am up to version 3.0 already. The main goal is to highlight some of the most important features and capabilities of each product and changes/additions when compared to the previous cheat sheet, version 2.0 in this case, though I will never be able to include all changes, features, and so on of every product. As such, this is by no means meant as an exclusive list.
VMwares’ Instant Clones technology with a touch of XenDesktop
Average time to read: 6 minutesAlso know as Just In Time (JIT) desktops, or vmFork technology. In short, it enables you to clone an existing virtual machine in just a matter of seconds — close to one clone per second actually. Its technology is based on in-memory cloning of a Master virtual machine (which also means it shares the memory of the so-called parent virtual machine) and copy-on-write for rapid deploy purposes. As you can probably imagine, this approach offers some unique desktop provisioning options when combined with, let’s say a Citrix XenDesktop Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, or VDI in short. Do note however that initially Instant Clones are/were a feature of VMware Horizon version 7 (Enterprise edition) and upwards, it was VMware’s Project Orion that introduced Instant Clones to Citrix’s XenDesktop, which is still in tech preview.
Citrix acquires Unidesk — here’s everything you want/need to know!
Average time to read: 4 minutesToday Citrix announced that they have acquired Unidesk — the leading application packaging (layering) and lifecycle management solution for the digital workspace. If you are not familiar with Unidesk, or application layering technology in general for that matter, I would strongly advice you to go and have a look at their website. They offer a couple of unique features taking application packaging and delivery to a whole new level. As they like to say ‘Layering changes everything‘. Let’s have a look at what this all means for both Citrix and Unidesk.
The application layering technology cheat sheet, version 2.0!
Average time to read: < 1 minuteJust over seven months ago I released a blogpost named ‘Application Layering Questions? I got answers. Graphical cheat sheet included!’. A lot has happened since then. And although the above mentioned blog is still very valid regarding it’s content, the cheat sheet could do with an update. A version 2.0 if you will.
