The E2EVC – Experts to Experts Virtualisation Congress (Epic edition) Amsterdam took place from Friday the 8th till Sunday the 10th. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept of E2EVC, go here– you’re missing out if you don’t. The following are a few notes from sessions I attended and people I spoke to. I’ve also included a few images here and there.
Windows Server 2019, but no RDSH? A Multi-User version of Windows10? What’s going on?
Last week Microsoft announced a new version of their Server Operating a.k.a. Windows Server 2019. Since the announcement I’ve seen many comments going back and forth regarding its licensing structure, the use of RDSH (or not) and so on. Here’s a short list of thoughts and facts I was able to gather.
A walk down memorylane – The Citrus… I mean, Citrix ICA and Microsoft RDP early days…
I am sure you’ve all heard the rumours surrounding Citrix, yes? That they are supposedly working together with Goldman Sachs on a potential sale process, no? Have a look here, here or here and here. Whilst this might be true or not I thought this might be a good time to reflect and have a look at how Citrix became the company they are today. A (high level) history lesson if you will.

What’s your strategy? Windows 10 Servicing Branches, Deployment Rings & tooling
With the introduction of Microsoft Windows 10 also came a couple of new ways to deploy and maintain Windows installations, this is what Microsoft refers to a Windows as a Service, or WaaS. Meant to make the life of the IT professional a little easier. As you might know, Windows 10 is supposed to be the final version of Windows, and thus new functionalities and features will be delivered in smaller incremental updates, two to three times per year as opposed to every 3 to 5 years prior to Windows 10, when a new version of Windows was released. This also introduces a couple of challenges when it comes to upgrading, updating and maintaining new and current installations. For this they came up with WaaS as mentioned earlier. Let’s have a look at what this means from a servicing and update perspective.
SURVEY (pre) announcement. The state of public cloud services – the 2016 community edition
Earlier this month I published a post named ’13 reasons that might prevent companies from successfully leveraging public cloud services’. Again, this post wasn’t meant to negatively position the cloud, not at all. I just wanted to point out some possible downsides and highlight a couple of, potentially important factors that need to be taken into consideration when ‘the cloud’ comes into play. With this in mind I thought it might be useful to put together a survey specifically aimed at public cloud computing services – consider this post a warm-up.
XenApp Express replaces Microsoft Azure RemoteApp – the facts so far
During the past week there has been a lot of excitement around the recent announcements regarding Azure RemoteApp being replaced by, what is now temporary called Citrix XenApp Express. Throughout this blog post I’d like to summarize what we know so far.
Citrix XenApp single machine setup – Cheap, fast and supported!
We all know that Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop are both well established within larger enterprises. Smaller companies however, also often rely on Citrix (using XenApp mostly) to securely deliver their applications and/or desktops to their end-users. Today I would like to focus on how to deliver XenApp hosted applications and desktops while minimizing costs and maximizing both performance and manageability. Note that this is not going to be a Microsoft RDSH vs. Citrix debate, instead I will assume that XenApp licenses are already in-place.
The ultimate Citrix printing internals cheat sheet! BIG Takeaway list included!
In this article (part two) I’d like to focus on the Citrix printing pathways, how they differ and when one or the other will, or can be used. I’ll also highlight the universal print driver, server and printer together with a whole bunch of CTX defaults, best practices including some of the most common troubleshooting tools and a BIG list of takeaways. However, knowing what happens after a user hits print and how traffic flows throughout our infrastructure is probably the best place to start. I have also included a BIG list of takeaways, which is available as a separate download as well.
