12 noteworthy announcements made during AWS re:Invent 2018

Average time to read: 10 minutes

In this post, I’d like to highlight a couple of eye-catching announcements (12 to be a bit more precise) made throughout re:Invent 2018, AWS’s annual main event, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have never been to one of their conferences personally, but man, would I like to go someday. AWS has always been and still is the Nr 1 in Cloud services and solutions worldwide. Of course, Microsoft is catching up quickly. Let’s dig in and see what they’ve been up to.

A few ‘State of the VDI and SBC union’ results in more detail

Average time to read: 8 minutes

Last month Login VSI presented the results of their State of the VDI and SBC union world-wide survey. Together with the help of Ruben Spruijt (CTO Atlantis computing) and ControlUp they published a thorough 59-page document holding all kinds of interesting VDI and SBC related statistics. The survey was completed by 580 people in total. I went through the report and picked out a couple of subjects which are currently of most interest for me personally, for multiple reasons.

Going to Citrix Synergy? Don’t miss these CTP hosted sessions – complete overview

Average time to read: 8 minutes

During Citrix Synergy, the CTP hosted sessions are among the highest rated, and with good reason. They are, almost without exception highly technical and will provide you with an unbiased view in every way possible. Below you will find an overview on all Synergy session presented by Citrix CTP’s, or Citrix Technology Professionals in full. Note that I’m not saying other sessions are less interesting or of a lower quality, not at all. It’s just that being a CTP myself I’d like to advertise the program (and its members) from time to time, that’s all really.

For your convenience – 100+ Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop FMA facts listed!

Average time to read: 15 minutes

I like, no wait, I love lists… there, I’ve said it. But no, really, I think (bulleted) lists are one of the best ways to share facts and knowledge. That’s also why I used multiple lists in my book, dozens of them containing hundreds of bulleted (FMA) facts. Throughout the various chapters I highlight multiple so-called ‘FMA facts’, 116 in total to be exact and I conclude each chapter with a list of key takeaways. This post is meant to share with you most of the FMA Facts that I came up while writing The FlexCast Management Architecture, though I did slightly alter quite a few of them.

My personal Community Edition… The best of September 2015!

Average time to read: 2 minutes

The amount of useful, interesting and fun to read community content in the form of blog posts, webinars, podcasts, tools etc. being shared each month can be overwhelming sometimes. This is my second attempt; I did one for August as well, in collecting some of the most popular blog post shared within the EUC community. Have fun reading.

The glass is half full… 50+ reasons why I think it might be time to move to XenApp 7.6!

Average time to read: 7 minutes

50_certLogo-3In this post I’ll list a whole bunch of reasons why I think it might be time to move your current XenApp IMA setup onto the new and enhanced FMA, which, depending on your license, could be either XenApp and/or XenDesktop. I’m sure you’ll find some of my arguments a bit to far-fetched or perhaps plain stupid even, and that’s fine. Feel free to comment. As the title implies I’m trying to take a positive approach here, so I won’t focus on any of the features (still) left out. Eventually we will all migrate, it’s only a question of when. Note that the below comments are in a random order.

Citrix buried VDI-in-a-Box and the Sanbolic acquisition… My thoughts.

Average time to read: 8 minutes

RIP-Spokeo-Info-BubbleCitrix killed VDI-in-a-Box! I got the news from Techtarget.com this morning, although I believe VIAB was already dead and buried over a year ago, so no real surprises there. It has been stated that some of the Citrix products, including VIAB, will be eliminated as part of the recently announced reorganisation. Unfortunately at the same time 700 full time employees and around 200 contractors will loose their jobs as well, of course one hasn’t got anything to do with the other. Citrix also says that some of the products will re-enter their portfolio build-in or as part of an existing or upcoming stack. Some think that the newly introduced WorkspacePod solution will play a role in this. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what they come up with next.

Want to know what’s trending with VDI & SBC? Current and future insights!

Average time to read: 4 minutes

You might have heard about something called Project VRC, or Project Virtual Reality Check, in full. The results of this independent and truly unique survey will provide us with many new insights into the usage of desktop virtualization and related technologies around the world. Last year over 1300 people participated, you can download the full 2013 / 2014 report here, and this year we (Ruben Spruijt en Jeroen van de Kamp) would like to repeat this survey to see how our industry has changed and to take a look at the future of VDI and SBC in 2015. To give you an idea on how they are doing, I’ve summarized the results up till now (also published on Twitter). Some interesting results so far, still over two weeks to go though.

citrix-summit-2015

I’m not in Las Vegas and I wasn’t able to catch the Summit Keynote live stream on the partner channel, honestly, I didn’t see a thing. All I could do was keep a close eye on my Twitter feed, which I did (so no NDA for me). Luckily it worked out pretty well. I’m sure I don’t have all the ins and outs and there are probably a few announcements that I’ve missed, those in Vegas will have some more detailed information I’m sure, but that doesn’t stop me from sharing what I did found out. It’s no secret that Citrix published most of the, if not all, major announcements on their website before, during and after the keynote session, although, it wasn’t all on there… read on.
