Little over two years ago I singed up to WordPress.com, bought my own personal domain basvankaam.com and just started writing. The main thought behind all this was to create some sort of online (personal) knowledge base and to learn about new and existing technologies and products as I progressed, primarily focusing on the Citrix portfolio. Over time I’ve learned that sharing what I know, or have learned, with others is probably one of the main reasons I kept, and keep, doing what I do. It’s fun, educational (in many ways) and very rewarding at the same time. Although at first I never expected it to turn out the way it has done today, something for which I can only be thankful. But don’t worry, that’s not what I wanted to talk about throughout this article.
Citrix buried VDI-in-a-Box and the Sanbolic acquisition… My thoughts.
Citrix killed VDI-in-a-Box! I got the news from Techtarget.com this morning, although I believe VIAB was already dead and buried over a year ago, so no real surprises there. It has been stated that some of the Citrix products, including VIAB, will be eliminated as part of the recently announced reorganisation. Unfortunately at the same time 700 full time employees and around 200 contractors will loose their jobs as well, of course one hasn’t got anything to do with the other. Citrix also says that some of the products will re-enter their portfolio build-in or as part of an existing or upcoming stack. Some think that the newly introduced WorkspacePod solution will play a role in this. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what they come up with next.
Want to know what’s trending with VDI & SBC? Current and future insights!
You might have heard about something called Project VRC, or Project Virtual Reality Check, in full. The results of this independent and truly unique survey will provide us with many new insights into the usage of desktop virtualization and related technologies around the world. Last year over 1300 people participated, you can download the full 2013 / 2014 report here, and this year we (Ruben Spruijt en Jeroen van de Kamp) would like to repeat this survey to see how our industry has changed and to take a look at the future of VDI and SBC in 2015. To give you an idea on how they are doing, I’ve summarized the results up till now (also published on Twitter). Some interesting results so far, still over two weeks to go though.
Running Microsoft Security Essentials on Server 2012
Just recently, while configuring my new virtual test setup at home (server 2012), one of the things I though about was what anti virus software to use. I’ve been using my Mac exclusively during the past 12 to 13 months or so, that’s right, it’s all I have, so I wasn’t really up to speed with some of the free AV solutions out there. Before I started using OS X I always used Microsoft Security Essentials, so I thought I’d give it a go on Server 2012 as well. Unfortunately it didn’t work nor is it supported in any way, till I found this useful hack (I know, it’s actually a workaround, hack just makes it sound way cooler). I also ran into an issue with my wireless network card.
What happens in Vegas… Goes on basvankaam.com Citrix Summit 2015 exposed!
I’m not in Las Vegas and I wasn’t able to catch the Summit Keynote live stream on the partner channel, honestly, I didn’t see a thing. All I could do was keep a close eye on my Twitter feed, which I did (so no NDA for me). Luckily it worked out pretty well. I’m sure I don’t have all the ins and outs and there are probably a few announcements that I’ve missed, those in Vegas will have some more detailed information I’m sure, but that doesn’t stop me from sharing what I did found out. It’s no secret that Citrix published most of the, if not all, major announcements on their website before, during and after the keynote session, although, it wasn’t all on there… read on.
Time to participate in the Project VRC “State of the VDI and SBC union 2015” survey
The independent R&D project ‘Virtual Reality Check’ (VRC) (www.projectvrc.com) was started in early 2009 by Ruben Spruijt (@rspruijt) and Jeroen van de Kamp (@thejeroen) and focuses on research in the desktop and application virtualization market. Several white papers with Login VSI (www.loginvsi.com) test results were published about the performance and best practices of different hypervisors, Microsoft Office versions, application virtualization solutions, Windows Operating Systems in server hosted desktop solutions and the impact of antivirus.
XenDesktop 7.x internals continued… The Server VDA in more detail.
Although the new FMA based Server VDA has been built from the ground up it still has a lot of similarities when compared to the ‘old’ ICA protocol stack deployed with XenApp 6.5 and earlier versions. However, unlike XenApp, the VDA (Virtual Delivery Agent) directly communicates with the Delivery Controller, it does this through the Broker Agent, basically the same way as we are used to with the desktop VDA (PortICA).
The ultimate Citrix XenDesktop 7.x internals cheat sheet!
Ever wondered what happens after a user fills in his or her username and password? What the difference is between internal and external user authentication, resource enumeration and the accompanying launch process? Or what about Web-Interface and StoreFront, do they both have the same authentication mechanism? What are the differences between the server and desktop VDA’s? What about the VDA and XenDesktop internals, what happens inside a VDA when a resource is launched? How does a connection get brokered? Read about this and more during the next 8 (mini) chapters.

Who needs Citrix Synergy Europe when we have events like E2EVC?!
Average time to read: 10 minutesDon’t get me wrong, I like Citrix, but every now and again companies, since their run by people, make mistakes, it happens. Normally you’d learn from them, but I guess there will always be exceptions. Dear Citrix, please listen to us, the community, and bring back Synergy to where it belongs (as well), Europe! Luckily we have E2EVC, which, even if Synergy would return, is ranked Nr. 1 by many, and since a couple of months I know why. Of course it’s hard to compare these types of events and maybe we shouldn’t, but let’s just say that Citrix leaves us no other choice. Read on please, it’s not all bad.
