Throughout the years I have had the pleasure of visiting dozens of companies to talk about their ‘digital workspace’ challenges. Projects ranged from thousands of users/machines to just a few hundred. Some of these challenges were related to physical desktops, some to virtual, some were on-premises, some were cloud-based. I’ve worked for retail companies, financial, travel, in healthcare, etc. No matter their branch and/or size, they all dealt with the same types of issues.
Windows applications still rule the universe, on-premises SBC/VDI deployments are still king, cloud on the rise
Last month (May 2018) Login VSI and Frame presented the results of their State of the VDI and SBC union world-wide survey – the 2018 edition. Mark Plettenberg (Product Manager at Login VSI) and Ruben Spruijt (CTO at Frame) have put together a 66-page document holding all kinds of interesting VDI and SBC related statistics. The survey was completed by 755 people worldwide – go here to download your own copy. I went through the report and picked out a couple of subjects which are currently of most interest, or to me anyway.
I’m joining (the) Technical Fellows – Why join the navy if you can be a pirate?
No, I didn’t switch companies, I’m perfectly fine where I am now. Technical Fellows is a Dutch initiative, founded by multiple experienced and seasoned IT professionals – trust me, these guys are really good. To be honest, I am by far the least technical and knowledgeable person in the group. Read on…
Focus on Citrix (or VMware, or Microsoft) – not printing!
I’ve always had a big interest in printing. It’s something I have written about and presented on extensively in the past. Throughout the years I have had my fair share of failure when it comes to printing in Citrix/RDSH/VDI based environments (who hasn’t?) so I decided to dig in a bit deeper. Not too long ago I got introduced to Tricerat, a very simple, yet effective and efficient solution when it comes to taking care of all things print related within Citrix environments, or any other type of environment, for that matter. Throughout this post I’d like to share with you how they simplify print management and let you, the IT Administrator, focus on Citrix – not printing!

A few ‘State of the VDI and SBC union’ results in more detail
Last month Login VSI presented the results of their State of the VDI and SBC union world-wide survey. Together with the help of Ruben Spruijt (CTO Atlantis computing) and ControlUp they published a thorough 59-page document holding all kinds of interesting VDI and SBC related statistics. The survey was completed by 580 people in total. I went through the report and picked out a couple of subjects which are currently of most interest for me personally, for multiple reasons.
Going to Citrix Synergy? Don’t miss these CTP hosted sessions – complete overview
During Citrix Synergy, the CTP hosted sessions are among the highest rated, and with good reason. They are, almost without exception highly technical and will provide you with an unbiased view in every way possible. Below you will find an overview on all Synergy session presented by Citrix CTP’s, or Citrix Technology Professionals in full. Note that I’m not saying other sessions are less interesting or of a lower quality, not at all. It’s just that being a CTP myself I’d like to advertise the program (and its members) from time to time, that’s all really.
The results are in — The state of public cloud services, survey. Downloadable .PDF report included
A couple of weeks ago I launched the first ever ‘The state of public cloud services – the 2016 community edition’ online survey. It included a short textual introduction followed by 35 questions in total and a few fun ‘quotes’ in between. While it turned out to be a bit more work then I anticipated beforehand, I am very satisfied with the final outcome. Below you will find the final report in a .PDF format, free for everyone to download.
Application Layering questions? I got answers. Graphical cheat sheet included!
Application virtualization (mostly App-V & Thinapp) has been around for some time now, application layering however, is still relatively new. Although assumed by some and theoretically possible in some cases, application layering is not meant as a replacement for application virtualization. In fact, you could say that they go hand in hand. Today there are multiple layering solutions available, and while the concept is the same they all take a (slightly) different approach. By the way, if it’s the (graphical) cheat sheet you’re interested in, I would suggest you scroll down.
Continue ReadingMy personal Community Edition… The best of September 2015!
Average time to read: 2 minutesThe amount of useful, interesting and fun to read community content in the form of blog posts, webinars, podcasts, tools etc. being shared each month can be overwhelming sometimes. This is my second attempt; I did one for August as well, in collecting some of the most popular blog post shared within the EUC community. Have fun reading.
